IRMO is a small town, located in Lexington & Richland counties, just 10 miles Northwest of downtown Columbia, SC. The Town of Irmo has a population of 11,097 (2010 census), nearby Columbia has a population of 129,272 and the combined population for Lexington and Richland counties is 646,895. Nearby towns and cities include: Columbia, Lexington and Chapin. Columbia is an easy drive down Interstate 26 (approximately 10 miles) and Lexington is just a few miles away across the scenic Dreher Shoals Dam at Lake Murray.

Friendly people! Also, highly prized are the excellent Irmo area schools in Lexington Richland District 5. Irmo is known as Home of the Okra Strut and The Gateway to Lake Murray with the beautiful lake only minutes away. Irmo offers friendly neighborhoods in a choice of price ranges (with great convenience to shopping, medical care, downtown Columbia and Lake Murray). The Club at Rawls Creek golf course is located in the town limits of Irmo. There are a number of hotels and restaurants in the Irmo area.

Columbiana Centre Mall is located just two minutes from the heart of Irmo. Anchor stores include Belk, JC Penney, Dillard's and Sears.

Okra is popular in Irmo! Irmo is home to the annual Irmo Okra Strut. The festival lasts for two days during late September. The well attended festival raises money for needed projects in the Town of Irmo. The event includes a "dam" run, arts and crafts, rides, muscial entertainment, rides and of course fried okra. Be sure to attend - it's great family entertainment!

  • Irmo Town Park - beautiful public town park in the heart of Irmo has walking trails, a water feature and stage area for a summer concert series
  • Seven Oaks Park - a full-service recreation complex offering fitness, athletics, and instructional and cultural arts programs to the Irmo community. The park features: 30,000 square-foot facility with full gymnasium, fitness area, dance studio, art studio, art gallery, meeting rooms, nine athletic fields, six tennis courts, paved walking trails, picnic shelters, playgrounds and a community garden
  • Saluda Shoals Park - just minutes from Irmo, a premier, natural, environmentally sensitive riverfront park that invites visitors to experience the treasures of the Saluda River through exceptional educational, recreational and cultural opportunities. The 400 acre park features: 11,000-square-foot Environmental Education Center and Exhibit Hall, 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art conference facility, paved/unpaved trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, river observation deck, boat ramp and canoe/kayak launch, and picnic shelters
  • Lake Murray Public Access at Dreher Shoals Dam - Just minutes from Irmo at the intersections of Lake Murray Boulevard, Bush River Road and S.C. Highway 6. Features include concrete boat launch ramp, parking, shoreline fishing, pier fishing, restrooms and picnic facilities. Also, this is one of the parking areas for walking the Dreher Shoals Dam. Entrance fees in warm weather months.
  • Harbison State Forest - encompasses 2,135 acres of forestland only 2 1/2 miles from Irmo. Over 18 miles of trails weave through the pine and hardwood forest, crossing wandering streams and descending through leafy glades to the Broad River. The trail system is popular for walking, jogging, hiking and bicycling and ranges from moderately easy to difficult.

    Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge will be opening in the Irmo area in late 2013. The 76-bed hospital, located at I-26 and Lake Murray Boulevard, is being built on 75 acres of gently rolling landscape. The aesthetically pleasing, pedestrian friendly hospital campus will be developed with abundant living and green space and a limited number of curb cuts for improved traffic flow. The facility will serve the residents of Irmo, Harbison, Chapin, Dutch Fork and surrounding areas who currently are traveling to downtown Columbia for acute care services.

    Dreher Island State Park, located on the shores on Lake Murray, is only 18 miles away. The state park features 112 camping sites, five lakeside villas, picnic areas with shelters, playground equipment, boat ramps, rental slips, and a nature trail on 348 acres and 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline.

    Lake Murray scenes Lake Murray:
    Named by a leading boating magazine as one of the Top Ten Places To Live and Boat in the United States! Lake Murray is located just minutes from Irmo. It's a big lake with over 600 miles of shoreline and a length of 41 miles. When completed in 1930, Lake Murray was the largest man-made lake in the world for power production purposes and the largest earthen dam. The lake is a very popular residential living area with waterfront homes and homes near the lake for easy lake access (Lexington, Irmo, Chapin, Prosperity). The lake is popular for boating, sailing, watersports and fishing. Lake Murray hosts numerous fishing tournaments (both local and large national). The Dreher Shoals Dam on Lake Murray (between Irmo and Lexington) is one of Columbia's most popular places to walk - each way is a distance of 1.6 miles for a roundtrip of just over 3 miles.
